Why Is My Natural Hair Journey So Overwhelming Sometimes?

May 6, 2026

If you’ve ever felt like your natural hair journey is a rollercoaster of emotions, you’re not alone. So many of us with locs—no matter where we are in our journey—face tough days when nothing seems to go right. Maybe your hair isn’t cooperating, or you’re just exhausted by the comments, stares, and unsolicited advice from family, friends, or even strangers. Sometimes it feels like nobody really understands how much work, love, and time we pour into our hair.

Honestly, it’s totally okay to feel frustrated. Navigating the expectations of others, battling social misconceptions, and handling the basic ups and downs of hair maintenance can wear anyone down. There are days when you might just want to throw on a hat and forget about it all—and that’s okay! We get it, because we’ve been there, too.

What helps is remembering why you started. The pride in your roots, the freedom of self-expression, and the beauty of embracing your natural self. There’s a powerful story behind every loc, and each one tells a tale of patience and authenticity, even on the days when things feel overwhelming.

If you’re struggling today, take a step back and breathe. Show yourself some compassion and grace. Try to connect with others who understand what you’re going through—a good conversation with someone who “gets it” can turn your whole day around. You might be navigating through heavy emotions or frustration right now, but remember: you’re building a legacy with every twist, every wash, and every moment you spend caring for your locs.

You’re not alone. Every emotion along this journey is valid—and you’re stronger than you might think.
